How I Get the Most Out of StockTwits

Twitter is for talkers without enough friends – people who talk without listening. They preach, they babble they tell us where they are going. Academic types that lecture to the crowd and then leave. Most of it is totally void of any information. They good news is that if you do not have any friends then it benefits you as well. You can follow whoever you want and learn all the minutia of their lives until you think they are your friend. Try DM’ing them though. Oh yeah, you can’t, they don’t follow you. You can try responding to a tweet looking for more information, but then again twitter is for talkers without enough friends – people who talk without listening. Granted, not everyone on Twitter is like this. I have had some excellent conversations with people there. But that is the exception, not the rule.

StockTwits on the other hand narrows and focuses the universe to those interested in trading stocks. Practitioners and Apprentices. And it does a lot of the work for you. I post to it and Twitter everyday but unlike the description above, I also communicate with many traders. Oh, There are one way talkers on StockTwits too, but since the information that they share has been curated it has some value. I gather different perspectives and insight and share ideas with some of the brightest people via StockTwits. Maybe I could get to the same place searching twitter but why when most of the work has been done for me? Here are several ways that I use it everyday:

  • Reading The StockTwits Blogs – Some of the best and brightest traders sharing their ideas and thought on the market in longer form
  • Reviewing The Suggested Stream – a group of traders, investors and analysts handpicked by StockTwits for their history of providing relevant and useful information
  • Following the All Equities Stream – plenty of good ideas come from this stream from people, and it also gives me a sense of sentiment on the market and tending stocks
  • Researching Individual Ticker – When I have an idea about a stock I want to know how many other eyeballs are looking there with me and what they are thinking, I may also ask them a question about their analysis
  • Posting my trades, ideas and blogs for others to see, comment on and maybe learn from
  • Posting charts to Chart.ly – Since I am a a technical trader this is the basis for my idea generation and to be able to share my analysis is great
  • Responding to questions put to me. Most questions come from new traders, and that is great. They have shown an interest already in getting a better understanding of the market by joining StockTwits, and if I can help them then that is great. But questions from pro’s can also lead to great collaborative idea generation.
  • Responding to interesting posts by others. Feedback is an important part of the community. Not the senseless bashing of others but the ‘nice job’s when you see a great trade executed or a request to clarify something or even acknowledgement of a great thought process shared.

Are you an Academic or a Practitioner? Think about how you use StockTwits. If all you do is post your analysis and then run back to your work you are missing most of the value. StockTwits is not twitter. Participate in the community and and reap the rewards.
