What in the World?

Four major world markets have had many trials and tribulations over the last year. The European debt crisis, the slowdown in China and countless problems in the United States. A quick look at the world markets in a performance chart over the last year reveals the winners and losers. Maybe a bit surprising, no? Over the last 12 months the German DAX, $DAX, has outperformed all markets by a wide margin with the S&P 500, $SPX coming in second. Japan’s Nikkei, $NKY is nearly flat, and bringing up the rear is the Shanghai Composite, $SSEC, down over 15%. One year ago would you have imagined this, as Europe was entering a debt crisis and the US was getting downgraded because they might not raise the debt ceiling? China was going to be the savior of all. Yeah that all worked out as you thought it would, right?
